What is VT ablation?
VT ablation is radiofrequency catheter ablation that creates scar tissue within the lower chambers of the heart in order to block the electrical signals that cause abnormal and occasionally life threatening rapid heart beats. It is performed under local anesthetic or a sedative but occasionally may require a general anesthetic.
During the procedure
During the procedure, catheters will be guided into your heart via a vein in your groin. The catheters are used to transmit electrical energy (radiofrequency ablation) to the target area of either ventricle, which damages the tissue and causes scarring. This will hopefully block the electrical signals that cause rapid heartbeats.
The procedure can take 4-6 hours and will require at least an overnight stay. There are some potentially serious complications with this type of intervention and therefore you will require specialist input from experienced cardiologists to help make managing your condition.
